As South Africans we have many achievements and records to be proud of. None less than the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle tour that attracts around 35 000 cyclists from within South Africa and from around the world. The event that takes place on Sunday 11th March 2007 is a buzz with activity and a few wary bodies at the end of the race.
The cycle race can in many ways be likened to our journey in 2007.
Quarter 1 – A gentle ride from the Cape Town CBD and down hospital hill, along the blue route past UCT. A nice easy ride that is flat and this inspires lots of nervous laughter and conversation.
Quarter 2 – The section through Newlands and onto the highway to Tokai is the first hill climb and serves as the initial test of the months of preparation.
Quarter 3 – Things are heating up and let’s hope there is no wind as the route makes it’s way to the first real hill climb – Smitswinkel’s Baai.
Quarter 4 – The race winds to an end as the cyclists make their way down Chapman’s peak but just as things seemed to be pretty easy along comes the notorious Suikerbossie climb on the outskirts of Hout Bay. The body and mind are tired and if only the end would come.
And finally the glide into Greenpoint as the race comes to an end. “Will you be back next year”, they ask and without a moments hesitation the reply is forthcoming, “For sure”.
On the Global front, Manpower produced some pleasing results for the period ending December 2006 with sales revenue in excess of US$ 19 billion from the 73 countries and territories. Our EMEA region was the greatest contributor to Manpower’s global revenue for the first time in the company’s 58 year history – a great feat “saluted” by Barbara Beck our EMEA President.
There are a number of global project currently underway which include:
Project Titan – cost efficiency saving required to bring us in line with our global oppositions operating expenses. This has already yielded savings of US$ 37 million that will be utilised in other areas of the business.
Project Lighthouse – a project to create greater awareness amongst Manpower employees as well as our clients of our various service offerings through all of the Manpower companies including Manpower, Jefferson Wells, Right Management and Elan.
Project Campus – This is aimed at setting up a global Manpower on-line registration and recruitment portal. We will be hearing more about Project Campus in the coming months.
Each year we are faced with new challenges and 2007 is no different. We need to continue building on Manpower’s VISION of:
“WE LEAD IN THE CREATION AND DELIVERY OF SERVICES THAT ENABLE OUR CLIENTS TO WIN IN THE CHANGING WORLD OF WORK”
And to achieve this we need to evolve from:
being Reactive to being Proactive
