WHATS THE SONG AND DANCE ABOUT FOR MARCH 21st?

Submitted by Taryn-Leigh Doubell

The Bill of Rights contained in the Constitution is the cornerstone of democracy in South Africa.
The Constitution further provides for the establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) of which the aim is to promote respect for human rights, promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights, and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in SA. The SAHRC was launched on 21 March 1996, 35 years after the fateful events of 21 March 1960 when demonstrators were gunned down by police:
The Native Laws Amendment Act of 1952 extended Government control over the movement of Africans to urban areas and abolished the use of the Pass Book (a document which Africans were required to carry on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’) in favour of a reference book which had to be carried at all times by all Africans.
Failure to produce the reference book on demand by the police, was a punishable offence. The PAC proposed an anti-Pass campaign to start on 21 March 1960. All African men were to take part in the campaign without their passes and present themselves for arrest.
Campaigners gathered at police stations in townships near Johannesburg where they were dispersed by police. At the Sharpeville police station a scuffle broke out. Part of a wire fence was trampled, allowing the crowd to move forward. The police opened fire, apparently without having been given a prior order to do so. Sixty-nine people were killed and 180 wounded.
In apartheid South Africa this day became known as Sharpeville Day and although not part of the official calendar of public holidays the event was commemorated among anti-apartheid movements.

FROM THE DESK OF ANDREW KRAMER - NATIONAL OPERATIONS MANAGER

This year and indeed the last quarter of 2006, has been spent focusing on branch and consultant activities as well as the staffing up of all branches. The KPI’s and activities and the management of them have borne the desired result thus far, this will be on-going, measure: management activity. The staffing –up of all the branches is still an on-going strategic battle which is proving a lot more difficult than anticipated. To meet our budgets we need a full staff compliment performing optimally.Cape Town Finance & General are performing admirably, with Bryanston Finance and Bryanston General to a lesser extent, doing remarkably well. One of the performers of last year, namely Durban T&E, has started off as laggards but will no doubt become competitive for the annual trophy. The competition criteria, for “branch of the year” and “temp consultant” , has still not been finalized, as this has to be easy to measure and fair with new consultants joining Manpower during the course of the competition.Perm Consultant CriteriaMin 36 Placements for the yearMeet individual budget for 2007Exceed last years actual by 10%Thereafter, greatest rand amount billed = winner.Any suggestions on the temp consultant and branch of the year, criteria , will be most welcomed.Keep dreaming and don’t let interference affect you achieving your goals.“Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal.”

OUR MANAGING DIRECTOR TIM HACKNEY URGES US TO "PUMP THOSE LEGS"

As South Africans we have many achievements and records to be proud of. None less than the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle tour that attracts around 35 000 cyclists from within South Africa and from around the world. The event that takes place on Sunday 11th March 2007 is a buzz with activity and a few wary bodies at the end of the race.

The cycle race can in many ways be likened to our journey in 2007.

Quarter 1 – A gentle ride from the Cape Town CBD and down hospital hill, along the blue route past UCT. A nice easy ride that is flat and this inspires lots of nervous laughter and conversation.

Quarter 2 – The section through Newlands and onto the highway to Tokai is the first hill climb and serves as the initial test of the months of preparation.

Quarter 3 – Things are heating up and let’s hope there is no wind as the route makes it’s way to the first real hill climb – Smitswinkel’s Baai.

Quarter 4 – The race winds to an end as the cyclists make their way down Chapman’s peak but just as things seemed to be pretty easy along comes the notorious Suikerbossie climb on the outskirts of Hout Bay. The body and mind are tired and if only the end would come.

And finally the glide into Greenpoint as the race comes to an end. “Will you be back next year”, they ask and without a moments hesitation the reply is forthcoming, “For sure”.

On the Global front, Manpower produced some pleasing results for the period ending December 2006 with sales revenue in excess of US$ 19 billion from the 73 countries and territories. Our EMEA region was the greatest contributor to Manpower’s global revenue for the first time in the company’s 58 year history – a great feat “saluted” by Barbara Beck our EMEA President.

There are a number of global project currently underway which include:

Project Titan – cost efficiency saving required to bring us in line with our global oppositions operating expenses. This has already yielded savings of US$ 37 million that will be utilised in other areas of the business.
Project Lighthouse – a project to create greater awareness amongst Manpower employees as well as our clients of our various service offerings through all of the Manpower companies including Manpower, Jefferson Wells, Right Management and Elan.
Project Campus – This is aimed at setting up a global Manpower on-line registration and recruitment portal. We will be hearing more about Project Campus in the coming months.

Each year we are faced with new challenges and 2007 is no different. We need to continue building on Manpower’s VISION of:

“WE LEAD IN THE CREATION AND DELIVERY OF SERVICES THAT ENABLE OUR CLIENTS TO WIN IN THE CHANGING WORLD OF WORK”

And to achieve this we need to evolve from:

being Reactive to being Proactive

5TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

READY TO BE COUNTED ON: HILDA NGOBENI
Hilda Ngobeni was appointed permanently as Head Office’s Cleaning Administrator in March 2002. Hilda is mother to five children and a grandmother to three very demanding grandchildren. Hilda is an extraordinary negotiator and gatherer of foreign currency. Hilda will gladly make you tea, clean your desk or fill the water cooler for a nominal fee of £5. In fact five pounds is the standard answer to most questions asked of Hilda. Hilda is a key factor to our success as enjoying a cup of tea made by her is sure to give you extra energy and refocus you on the task at hand. It doesn’t matter the mood in the office, weather conditions, taxi delays or the state of the pound Hilda is always here ready to be counted on.

5TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONTINUES

5 YEARS AT THE HELM: TIM HACKNEY
Following 17 years of recruitment experience, Timothy Hackney joined Manpower as the Managing Director in February 2002. Tim has been married to Gillian for 21 years this year; they have 3 children, Robert (16 years), Caitlin and Christopher (10 years). Tim a keen (but not so often) golfer currently plays off an 11 handicap. Managing Manpower and 3 busy kids has reduced his potential time on the golf course. As Tim is an innovative individual he has recruited Gillian and the twins into a “4 ball” and they often enjoy a Sunday afternoon at the golf course together. A Spiced Gold and Coke fan, Tim will often order stirfry as his favourite diner choice.

MOVING ON UP

Rodney Govender appointed as Branch Manger of Manpower Bryanston General Division.

Rodney began his highly successful career at Manpower in Oct 2004 as a temp consultant. Within 18 months this diligent individual grew his headcount to 40. In November of last year Rodney married Leigh Ann in their family home of Durban. We wish Rodney all the best of success and he develops his team.
